Cell-based assays should ideally use primary cells that retain the memory of their tissue of origin and reflect its state of health or disease.

AvantiCell is building a comprehensive and unique range of assays based upon:

• Human and animal primary cells from a variety of
• tissues

• Cells from animal models relevant to major
• disease of humans

Primary cells, especially those of human origin, are obtainable only in limited numbers and will vary in performance with donor source. AvantiCell has addressed limitations of supply through partnership with an organisation whose proprietary technology enables primary cell expansion and extends cell longevity whilst retaining differentiated function. This technology, together with AvantiCell’s in-house production of a range of primary human cell types, provides exceptional access to primary cell-based analysis.

AvantiCell will, during 2009, expand its assay focus to include neuronal cells derived from a unique animal model which reproduces, for the first time, a key molecular lesion in the development of human dementias and movement disorders. These assays will initially be made available as an in-house AvantiCell service. Assays kits based on neurodegenerative cells are expected to be launched in early 2010.
