Cell-based assays, unlike conventional biochemical (solution-phase) assays, are theoretically capable of generating multiple readouts from each test. This might be envisaged as the measurement of 2 or more steps in a signalling pathway or, alternatively, the ability to measure events in more than one cell type, a capability relevant to, for example, the paracrine signalling that is an integral part of tumour metastasis. 3-D cell screens are expected to provide the best in vitro models. Cell-based assays incorporating 3-D culture and/or multiplex options will be added to the AvantiCell product range during 2007-8.
