AvantiCell Science Ltd was incorporated in June 2006, and began operating from its premises on the Auchincruive Estate near Ayr in August of that year. The Company was founded by Jo Oliver and Colin Wilde to exploit know-how and proprietary technology for the culture of mammalian cells. Likewise, the experience of the high-calibre staff is focused on cell-based analysis.

The Company's founding principle is that advances in cell culture technology enable the development of physiologically-relevant alternatives to animal testing in research and drug discovery. Accordingly, AvantiCell assays utilise cells that retain the memory of their tissue of origin, and incorporate culture conditions where cell performance is optimised by careful selection of culture conditions and cell microenvironment.

Early successes came in applying leading-edge cell-culture technology to allow the introduction of a unique system for study of transport of xenobiotic molecules across the mammary epithelium, from the circulation into milk, modelling their potential to enter the human food chain.
